Washington, D.C. -- During his annual State of the Union address, President George W. Bush attempted to address the concerns of Americans with disabilities, saying, "Because a society is measured by how it treats the weak and vulnerable, we must... help people overcome disabilities."
In response to Bush's offensive language, Becky Ogle, Director of Disability Outreach for the Democratic National Committee, released the following statement.
"People with disabilities are not weak, we are not vulnerable, and we do not want to overcome our disabilities. We live productive lives and we deserve a President who understands that and doesn't denigrate us.
"Instead of offering real leadership, President Bush and his Washington Republicans want to cut the guaranteed benefits we receive from Social Security, the very program that has helped people with disabilities realize our full potential for over seventy years."
