  1. Please describe any experience with disability you have had in your life or career.

In 2006, I served as a New York State Court ADA Liaison at 60 Centre Street. My job was to assist anyone who called with courthouse related disability-related issues.

  2. How will you incorporate people with disabilities into your campaign?

People with disabilities are invited to participate in my campaign alongside anybody else.

  3. If you are in private practice, is your office accessible to people with disabilities? If not, what have you done to ensure access?

I am not in private practice.

  4. Is the courthouse in which you work accessible to people with all kinds of disabilities?

    Yes.

  5. Has a person with a disability appeared before your court as a juror or litigant? If so, please indicate what, if any, challenges arose? And how were they handled?

People in wheelchairs have appeared for conferences. I always made sure to conduct conferences in areas that are wheelchair accessible.

  6. Do you believe that a person who is deaf / hard of hearing or one who is blind/or has low vision can serve as a juror? Why or why not?

Absolutely. The court system ensures that people with disabilities have access to technology and other services that facilitate full participation as a juror. For example, there are headsets to assist people who are hard of hearing. I would encourage jury service because it is a civic responsibility and people with disabilities should play a role in safeguarding justice.

  7. Are you willing to hire either on a job share or full time basis, a qualified law clerk/secretary with a disability?

    Yes.

  8. How will you work within the court structure to assure the accessibility of all facilities of the courts? For example, will you participate in the Committee for People with Disabilities, relevant training opportunities?

I commit to keeping up to date on services and programs available to people with disabilities and to ensure that no one is ever left out or denied access.

  9. How would you act when the family of a person with physical or cognitive disabilities attempts to control their assets?

Depending on the nature of the disability, a guardian may be appropriate. As a judge, I would ensure that litigants are not taken advantage of and are afforded every protection that the law makes available.
